Students
Moot Court

The PhoenixLaw Moot Court program has excelled under the direction of Professor Victoria Salzmann and has a record of significant successes.  Professor Salzmann is a full-time faculty member with extensive moot court experience, and is assisted by other faculty members and students.  The Moot Court Program represents the School’s highest level of written and oral advocacy and provides students with opportunities to practice critical-thinking, persuasive-writing, and oral-advocacy skills.  Five intra-school competitions have been held (Spring 2007, Fall 2007, Spring 2008, Fall 2008, and Spring 2009). The intra-scholastic competitions are student-run and are judged by a combination of faculty, former student national competitors, and the Moot Court Administrative Board.

PhoenixLaw’s Moot Court teams have participated in four inter-school competitions—and nearly every time they have advanced to at least the quarter-finals.  Many faculty members have volunteered their time to serve as coaches and judges. A mix of day and evening students (in approximately a 65% day to 35% evening ratio) constitute the teams.  The coaches are Professor Victoria Salzmann, a full-time doctrinal professor and the program’s faculty director; Professor Dave Cole, a full-time doctrinal professor who recently retired from the Maricopa County Superior Court bench; Professor Mitchell Fleischmann, a full-time LP professor with coaching experience at another law school; and Julia Guinane, a former student who was a member of three of PhoenixLaw’s moot court teams and clerked for the Chief Justice of the Arizona Supreme Court last year.
