1. How do I obtain financial aid?
There are various types of financial aid available to Law students. PhoenixLaw participates in both the Federal Family Education Loan (Stafford) Loan Program and in the Federal GradPLUS Loan Program. In addition there may be scholarships and private alternative loans available. Please download the Financial Aid Handbook from the PhoenixLaw.edu website for more detailed descriptions of these programs.
2. How much financial can I receive?
Depending on your circumstances you may be able to receive a combination of Federal Stafford Loans and GradPLUS loans (or private alternative loans) to cover the estimated cost of attendance for the school year. A credit check is required for GradPLUS and private alternative loans. Please read the Financial Aid Handbook for more details.
3. What is the minimum I can borrow?
There is no specific minimum. Your Stafford loan amount will be offered based on expected family contribution (EFC) and any scholarship award, up to $20,500 each academic year. You will have the opportunity to review the reward amount and you may choose a smaller amount before it is processed.
4. Where do I start?
The first step in applying for Federal Financial Aid programs is to fill out a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA); the school code for PhoenixLaw is G41314. See the Financial Aid section of the PhoenixLaw.edu website for more detailed instructions.
5. What are the steps in applying for financial aid?
After you have completed your FASFA application, you will need to pay your initial seat deposit in order for PhoneixLaw to process you financial aid application. Step by step instructions are on the website: Apply HERE
6. Which lender does the school have the best rapport with?
PhoenixLaw works with several lenders for Stafford and GradPLUS Loans. Borrowers must choose their own lenders. Phoenix School of Law's lender list includes lenders that have been evaluated by the office of Financial Aid and Student Services using criteria we deem appropriate and valuable to consider when borrowing a student loan. These lenders are listed on our website: http://www.easiapp.org/phoenixlaw/
7. What secondary sources of financial aid are there and how do we access them?
Private Alternative Loans are available for students that require funding beyond the Stafford loan. Eligibility for these types of loans is based on credit history, citizenship status, and other factors as determined by the lending institution. Two private loan lenders are listed on our website as examples; for more information please visit their websites, www.salliemae.com and www.nelnet.com. Please note that your combined financial aid (scholarships, Stafford loans, GradPLUS and private loans) cannot exceed your total cost of attendance.
8. Can I get an appointment with a real person to get answers?
Yes, our financial aid office is open from 9:00am - 5:00pm Monday through Friday, or by appointment. Call 602-682-6800 or email financialaid@phoenixlaw.edu.
9. When am I'm supposed to fill out a new FAFSA?
The financial aid department will alert you when it's time to fill out a new FAFSA, however if you wish to begin early then please contact the Financial Aid office for assistance. Keep in mind the Department of Education requires a new FASFA to be completed annually; the deadlines vary by year and whether you first enroll for the spring or fall semester.
10. When will financial aid be dispersed?
This process is one that usually takes place within the first several weeks of class. However this could take longer depending on the lender and if they have received everything they need from the student. For students who have never borrowed Title IV funding before, then the first disbursement will not take place until after the first 30 days of enrollment.
11. When will it be applied to my student account?
This process is electronic and funds for your financial aid will be applied to your student account once the money is received by the school from your lender.
12. How do I confirm that I completed all the steps for financial aid?
The financial aid office will alert you to any steps that are missing; however communication with your financial aid office is encouraged. If there is a problem or something that is needed then they can let you know right away. Being proactive is the best way to make sure all steps are completed.
13. What are the deadlines for financial aid?
This varies by semester. The financial aid department will alert the students to any deadlines thru email or other forms of communication. However, as always, if you have any questions or concerns then you should contact the financial aid office.
